Laura Furia - matricola: R05699 Characterization of the tumor cell response to HDAC inhibitors Abstract: The process of cell transformation involves genetic and epigenetic alterations. Epigenetic modifications change the chromatin structure without altering the DNA sequence, and can affect gene expression and all of the nuclear functions. For these reasons, the interest for drugs able to interfere with epigenetic alterations in cancer has grown steadily. Histone acetylation is one of the most well characterized histone modifications, and it is controlled by two classes of enzymes: histone acetyltransferases (HATs), and histone deacetylases (HDACs). Alterations of HDAC activity and function have been consistently found in tumor cells. HDAC inhibition is considered therefore as a promising strategy for therapeutic intervention.
