The research is focused on the dramatic production of the contemporary Irish poet Brendan Kennelly, whose ‘Plays for Women’ include three adaptations of Greek tragedies: Sophocles’ Antigone and Euripides’ Medea and The Trojan Women which I analyzed in my thesis. Though keeping the structure, plot and characters of the original Greek plays intact, in his ‘New Versions’ – as Kennelly himself calls his plays – the Irish poet actually offers a ‘new version’ of each tragedy, insofar he inserts in his texts several topical issues concerning features and aspects of Irish culture and social life – such as divorce, abortion and women’s issues – that were of massive importance in the Eighties and Nineties in Ireland. Kennelly’s rewritings of Greek tragedies also develop the poet’s credo about the circular occurrence of human events and behaviours which is a recurring theme in Kennelly’s poetic production, too.
