Abstract
Arsenic Resistant Bacteria: Isolation, Characterization and Testing For a Potential Use in Phytoremediation of Arsenic Contaminated Soil The work in this thesis deals with study of arsenic resistant bacteria isolated from two agricultural soils of Bangladesh and an Italian soil with different levels of arsenic contamination. The work also includes a preliminary study at microcosm level aimed to evaluate the potentiality of arsenic phytoextraction of sunflower plants in association with a bacterial strain in arsenic contaminated soil. Arsenic resistant bacteria capable of reducing As(V) were isolated from two agricultural soils, Paddy field and lentil field, of Bangladesh. Genetic determinants for arsenic resistance, coding for arsenite efflux pump or arsenate reductase enzyme were detected in four isolates. Isolate Alcaligenes sp. Dhal L was chosen as a model strain due to its high arsenic resistance level and presence of ACR3 gene, for the soil microcosm experiment in association with sunflower plants [...]
