Study of the Shoot Apical Meristem initiation and regulation in Zea mays. The shoot apical meristem (SAM) is a group of cells that are responsible for plant development thus understanding the mechanism of SAM formation represents a priority issue in the plant developmental biology. A mutation of the shootmeristemless (sml) gene affects shoot apical meristem organization. Introgression of this mutation in different genetic backgrounds has highlighted the epistatic interaction between sml and the unlinked distorted growth (dgr) gene. Seeds homozygous for both sml and dgr have a shootless phenotype and Dgr/-sml/sml seeds produce plants with many developmental abnormalities (dab mutant). sml map position has been defined by linkage analysis with visible and molecular markers. To clone it we adopted a candidate gene approach. The SHOOTORGANIZATION1 (SHO1) rice gene lies on a sintenic region, the sho1 mutation affects the SAM formation.
