Generalized Interval Systems (GIS) consist in algebraic structures able to describe spaces of musical objects together with their interval properties. I present new applications of GIS theory to symbolic music representation and retrieval. I introduce GIS theory together with some examples of melodic and rhythmic GIS and an analysis of their transformational and algebraic properties. I define a formal object oriented model for music analysis representation, in which the choice of specific type of relations between musical entities determines the analytic approach. I show how in this model GIS can be introduced in order to describe classical analysis. This model was the basis for the definition of the analysis layer of the IEEE standard P1599, an XML language for music encoding. I integrate GIS theory and a recent spectral-graph technique for establishing melodic similarity.
